RNA Interference

Mechanism present in all plants and animals that involves elimination of certain targeted RNA molecules such as RNA messages by a set of related mechanisms that can involve small RNA fragments that can bring about silencing of messages.Thought to be part of an ancient cellular defense and regulatory mechanism. One result of this process is silencing of particular genes. This process is now widely used in research as a method to turn off particular gene activities.
